Kids Talk Adoption

A couple of weeks ago I was watching a friend's little boy for the evening.  He is 5 years old and his name is Wyatt.  We were sitting at the diner table; me, Wyatt, Edi, Amelia, and John Mac.  I think Daniel had a meeting that night and had already left.  Anyway, this is how the conversation went:

Wyatt:  Mrs. Annice, I know what adoption means now.

Me:  You do? What?

Wyatt:  Well a Mommy has a baby in her stomach but she cannot take care of it good so she gives it to another Mommy.

Edi:  Wyatt, you should not say "give away".  That sounds like the Mommy did not love the baby.  You should say the Mommy placed the baby with another Mommy because she loved it so much.  Right Mama?  John Mac's Mommy loved him very much.

Me:  Yes Edi she does.  Wyatt, I'm glad you're learning about adoption and you can talk to me about it anytime.

It was such a sweet conversation.  They didn't talk about it anymore, but the seeds of good adoption language have surely been planted at my house and now they will flow to Wyatt's house.

Thank you Lord for my precious family!

What a great conversation you all had. We have had several of those "talks" at our house as well. What sweet little hearts and minds you have been entrusted with! You are a great mommy!!!!

As Wyatt's mommy, I am so thankful that Edi felt bold enough to stand up for what she thought needed to be said, and said it. Wyatt has asked us alot of questions, and loves John Mac to pieces. Now he knows how to better choose is language and how just a simple word can mean so much. Love is so awesome when it spreads - and continues to spread, thank for spreading to us.
